The Mariposa mutants, if you remember, were the ones made for the masters army, they were the main bad guys in Fallout 1.
If my suspicions are correct, these Super Mutants were brought over by the Midwest Brotherhood of Steel; the same ones from Fallout Tactics who appear to be the Brotherhood in Fallout 4. That Brotherhood had ghouls, humans and super mutants in their ranks and traveled from California to Illinois in airships; the same kind the brotherhood has in Fallout 4
