But the story isn’t even about Phil’s transition. It’s about his friend, who is a dragon princess, suffering from depression. That’s so niche. Nobody’s going to read it.

I’d read it.

Phils transition seems entirely tangential. How you bring it up in the story, if you ever do in the first place, might be cringey but… whoop de diddley.

“dragon princess” is a little vague, is she a princess of dragons, is she half dragon half princess, is she a dragon that is also a princess
